I know Nexus is getting some work done on their network right now, so you might just want to wait a week or two before going balls-in with manual mod installation. Wrye bash is an alternative. You will probably end up getting it anyways to make bash patches. It's not as convenient, but it should be able to do everything NMM does assuming you can download the mods. Wrye Bash is considered the strongest tool in general I believe. Mod Organiser is similar and more newb-friendly I've heard if you are not super experienced.
I've used Wrye since Morrowind so that's my goto. NMM has always had problems despite it's ease of use. How is Mod Manager more "newb-friendly"? I'd say it is a lot more complicated.
If you use Mod Organizer you will be using Wrye Bash in addition to it either way, in order to make bashed patches. The way MO does not do anything to your actual Skyrim installation is what makes it the greatest manager of all; every mod you installed is in another folder, which is virtually implemented into your Skyrim game.

Still pretty. To name a few: MO doesn't actually change your Skyrim folder It's cleaner, and you have less chance of damaging your vanilla files.
Better interface - you can quick-search for a mod, rather than scrolling or dealing with NMM's categories. In my experience, it has been far more stable than NMM. Note also that MO works with Nexus download links, so there's really no downside, how to download nexus mods without an account.
I'm considering checking out MO myself due Nexus integration for keeping up to date mods. Where on the planet is anybody charging for any mod?? Not manually, not through NMM.

Apr 24, · thanks for adding that edit it musta just been a hotfix, I wanna also add I noticed the bottom download button is a direct link for and that actually has let me log in (I downloaded it out pure boredom by the way if you're wondering lol) so this either a report to the webmaster if that's a mistake or I'm curious if this version's some sort of stable one that might actually be better.
